I offer several levels of editorial support depending on the stage of your manuscript and the degree of intervention requested.
Copyediting is the least intensive of the three. It involves checking a nearly final draft for things like grammar, punctuation, spelling, terminological consistency, and the like. In cases where the author is using Chicago style, I make sure everything looks good in that department as well.
Line editing is reserved for manuscripts nearing their final form in terms of both content and structure, though not quite ready for thorough copyediting. It involves refinement at the level of the sentence and paragraph—with particular attention to issues of readability, ambiguity, redundancy, transitions, and the like.
Developmental editing is the most intensive and often involves a bit of line editing by default. It involves sustained work with a manuscript in the early or middle stages of development. This work concerns theoretical framing, argument structure, conceptual and narrative throughlines, the relationship between central claims and evidence, and the like.
Pricing
Copyediting: $0.02–$0.05 per word
Line Editing: $0.03–$0.06 per word
Developmental Editing: $0.05–$0.10 per word
